The Fourth Commandment is:

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
So we are all to keep the Sabbath weekly as an acknowledgement of God as the Creator.

This is a great excuse to crash and burn at home when you get off work Friday night. It’s been a hard week. You are exhausted by all the fools and con jobs in management where you work. You can just put it out of your mind at let yourself absorb the good vibes of God the Father as you get some rest and shuteye over night and get up refreshed so you can head off to Sabbath Services to worship and glorify God and learn more about Him as you delight in the Sabbath.

Then you can go and eat afterward and enjoy the literal fruit of your labors from the prior week. Sometimes with other cult members likeminded as yourself, with your family with an enjoyable meal. And you could eat out in a restaurant and be served like a god, picturing a mini millennium Feast of Tabernacles scenario, depending upon how liberal or literal your particular sub cult views such things. Maybe. Maybe not.

Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to work?

But wait!

The above passage is from Exodus 20!

The below passage is from Deuteronomy 5:

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Now wait just one darned minute! This is a game changer!

The reason to keep the Sabbath is that you are an Israelite and you keep it because Yaweh brought you out of the slavery of Egypt as your deliverer by His Great Power!

What happened to keeping the Sabbath because God is the Creator?!!!

Something changed in the retelling!

I suppose Sabbath keeping believing Christians can sort of see themselves as spiritual Israelites, the children of Abraham, being delivered from Egypt, the land of Sin, and thereby, keep the Sabbath to memorialize God as our deliverer. Should we not perceive God the Father as the Great Creator?

Well, no matter.

Let’s move on.

Leviticus 25 speaks of a land Sabbath:

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD. Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land. And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee, And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat.
How is this supposed to work?

Later in the same chapter, that question is answered:

And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase: Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years. And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.
There you have it! Keep the land Sabbath and it will all work out for you!

Note what it says in Malachi 3:10-12:

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.
Yes, “prove me now herewith”.

Keep the land Sabbath.

How is that working for you.

Here is the reality: Farmers in the cult over the past 7 decades have tried this at various times and various places. Universally, they had difficulties: Many went into debt and some lost their land. The reason? There was no real increase in the sixth year.

These laws and statutes may have worked for the physical nation Israel during the “Old Testament” times. The laws and statutes at best were for a particular time, particular place and particular circumstances, which included “the land which God hath given you”. They may not work the same for you today in the place you find yourself. You need to rightly divide “the Word of Truth”.

Because if you aren’t careful, you could go bankrupt.

Happy Sabbath all!
